Working in oil on canvas, Christine Mouton creates meticulously observed still life paintings that celebrate the enduring beauty of everyday objects and the stories they carry. Drawing upon the rich tradition of still life painting, Mouton carefully stages each composition herself, arranging treasured family heirlooms, delicate glass jars, and collected objects into intimate tableaux that evoke memory, heritage, and the passage of time.

Her practice is rooted in close observation and technical precision. Through a realistic painting style, Mouton captures the subtle interplay of light, reflection, texture, and transparency, transforming familiar objects into subjects of quiet contemplation. The glass vessels that frequently appear in her work become both formal and symbolic devices, reflecting and refracting their surroundings while suggesting themes of preservation, fragility, and continuity.

More than simple representations of objects, Mouton's paintings are personal narratives. The heirlooms she incorporates carry traces of family history, linking generations through material culture and shared memory. Each carefully considered arrangement becomes an ode to the rituals of collecting, remembering, and cherishing what might otherwise be overlooked.

By reimagining the classical still life for a contemporary audience, Christine Mouton invites viewers to slow down and appreciate the beauty embedded in ordinary things. Her paintings honour a centuries old artistic tradition while offering a deeply personal reflection on home, inheritance, and the enduring significance of the objects that accompany our lives.

Born in 1958, Christine Mouton is a Johannesburg based artist whose evocative still life paintings celebrate the beauty, balance, and quiet resonance of everyday objects. After successful careers in law, advertising, and the fashion industry, she turned to painting, drawing on a lifelong appreciation for aesthetics that was shaped by her childhood experiences in her Danish grandmother’s home in Windhoek, Namibia, where she developed an enduring love for the simplicity and craftsmanship of Scandinavian design. Inspired by the Dutch Masters, Mouton creates richly coloured compositions set against dramatic dark backgrounds, exploring themes of symmetry, harmony, light, and texture.

While her work is rooted in the simple desire to capture moments and objects that hold personal significance, her paintings often evoke reflections on memory, time, and transformation. Mouton has furthered her artistic knowledge through studies in art history with Oxford University and The Jungian Institute, and holds a Creative MBA from the University of Reading, where she graduated with distinction for her thesis on the sponsorship of the arts in South Africa. Her practice continues to be guided by a deep appreciation for beauty, stillness, and the enduring power of observation.
