Mncedi Madolo’s solo showing “Speaking In Tongues” is a provocative collection of collaged and asemblaged pieces which highlight the essence of the Johannesburg inner city. This collection of canvas works showcases the cacophony of texts which cover our urban cityscape. The texts which populate the worlds which Madolo’s Afro-futuristic characters exist in reference many of the pop iconography. From the familiar sight of the guerilla posters which advertise services such as abortions and penis enlargement, to our very own popular brands such as GRANDPA POWDER, JUNGLE OATS and newspaper headline posters. All of these texts make reference to the many commands which unleash themselves on the city’s inhabitants – all speaking simultaneously at u, requesting, commanding, pleading and begging us to hear and listen.

This collection of works which presents the an out sider perspective of the inner city, one filled with grit grime and unseen masses. It is a perspective of a passerby who does not see those who live and interact with the Jo’burg CBD on a daily basis as human but instead all that exists within inner city as a a decipherable pandemonium of otherness. This is evident in the claustrophobic nature the compositions of Madolo’s canvases. The amalgamation of features belonging to the figures he populates his works with emphasize the dehumanization of the populous of those driving in and out of the inner city.
