“My work explores the impact of man-made systems of power on the lived experience and the separation of global versus local ideologies.”
Mncedi Madolo was born in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa in 1988. In 2014, he earned a National Diploma in Fine Arts from Walter Sisulu University, before moving to Johannesburg in 2017. Upon arriving in Johannesburg, Madolo found himself immersed in the city's vibrant urban life. This new environment became a rich source of inspiration for him, leading to an exploration of the complexities of lower middle-class existence. His art poignantly captures the tension between aspirations and the stark realities of life, resonating with a broad audience.

Madolo uses his canvas to weave stories, combining magazine covers that exalt "black is beautiful" with flyers offering quick solutions to life's challenges. His incisive cartoon sketches challenge the norms, offering a fresh lens through which to view familiar narratives. The energy of the streets deeply influences Madolo's artistic process. He skillfully incorporates materials and images from the urban landscape into his work, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected stories. His art is more than a visual feast; it's an exploration of the layers of urban existence.

“I primarily use collage as a form of expression, and incorporate popular brands, flyers, and posters as a way of unveiling a tapestry of perceptions around contemporary life and spiritual practice that are currently prevalent in Africa and globally.”

Mncedi Madolo’s unwavering commitment to sustainability sets him apart from other contemporary artists. While many others express their creativity using traditional mediums, Madolo has boldly incorporated recycling and upcycling into his art, thereby advocating for sustainable practices within the art world. By incorporating recycled and upcycled materials into his works, he encourages art enthusiasts to invest in pieces that are not only aesthetically compelling but also environmentally responsible. Madolo's creativity extends beyond painting – an artist with versatility and depth, he is also a proficient illustrator, contributing to major national newspapers.
