Form and Femininity: Marke Meyer

Marke Meyer is a sculptor, art photographer and a multi-media artist who spent his childhood in the mountains of Lesotho. With a history in agriculture, his art career took shape slowly, with sculpture and photography becoming his tools for exploring the human figure. Meyer is essentially a poet at heart, but now, having abandoned pen and paper in exchange for space itself, he now uses sculpture to create his own unique, quirky concoction of visual poetry.

 

Meyer’s method of creation begins by modelling clay, using live models as reference, for his original prototype of a work. He is content working in any scale, from hand-held artworks to life-sized constructions. These pieces are, in due course, cast in bronze for the final outcome of a piece. Meyer has also pioneered the use of suspension to best display his works, and to create the feeling of lightness, whimsy and freedom. The artist is constantly reinventing himself, but always remains true to his narrative. He is an innovator who constantly experiments with new concepts, including the use of other metals, new technology and new finishes.

 

"Generally, my sculptures transmit the awareness of transitioning into adulthood without losing the subjective naivety of the younger person. These works are about growing up on your own terms. Often there is a subtle reference to the question What If? What if Eve hadn't plucked the apple? What if we had chosen a different 'shoe' for our path? Through this questioning, we may perhaps arrive at a deeper self-knowledge."
