NEBULAE

SOLO EXHIBITION

MARIËTTE KOTZÉ

28th April – 23rd May 2022

Curated by Candice Berman

Like the dark night sky, this series presents the mysteries of the galaxies and the beauty of outer space, barely visible to the human eye. Fluorescence from embedded hot stars make these exquisite clouds of colour and interstellar dust visible, often only detectable through the means of long exposure and special filters. Star forming regions created by the random formations of gas, dust and other materials clumping together in various densities capture the spontaneity of the universe and its ephemeral and fleeting nature.

These images, like their inspiration, are created at night. Opening up the scanner and exposing the lens to the night sky lets in a different quality of light, changing colour in a way that only happens after dark. Some images are inverted to accentuate the darker hues; and allowing the moving formations to glow as if luminous formations in black space.
