“The xenophobic upheavals that swept across South Africa in early 2008 served as a catalyst for my exploration of life on the streets of Cape Town, as photographed from the interior of my car, during the winter rains.
Throughout the process of capturing the images there was a strong sense of the rain-splattered windows of my car acting as a barrier separating me, the protected insider, from the outsiders whose lives were in disruption.
This experience increased my awareness of the divide between the life of an insider and an outsider, leaving me with mixed feelings – of gratitude that I was not one of the outsiders and anxiety about the future – my own and that of everyone else who was directly affected.
“This Series is an interpretation of life on the streets of Cape Town, photographed from the interior of my car during the winter rains of 2008.
The rain-splattered windows separating me, the insider, from the outsiders whose lives were in disruption of the overwhelming rains that hit Cape Town in 2008.”
