Conversion Series, 2020

My ‘Conversion series’ of abstract paintings on paper was initiated during the early stages of lockdown when access to stores and studios was denied.

The artworks originate as randomly cropped sections of large archival prints, from a body of photographic work entitled ‘Urban Texture’, which focused on concrete structures in urban settings. I used these cropped prints as a starting point, presenting myself with opportunities to resolve these visual conundrums.

Exploring themes around urban decay and imperfection, I used a combination of inks, oil pastels and acrylics to create the new works. During this process I was reminded of what Ernst Fischer once said: ’Art is necessary in order that man should be able to recognise and change the world. But art is also necessary by virtue of the magic inherent in it’.
