Talisman was created on a large canvas over the course of a few months. I worked through many different images on the canvas until I arrived at the final image. I decided to create the tubular shapes which I think reference fungi and possibly the psychedelic space. The elliptical glare shape on the bowl was important as it seemed to balance out the heavy shapes at the top. I like the fact that I cut the horizon of the table out with an acrid green mist. For me this painting shows the tension between dark and light, which is something I’ve always been interested in.
I see the painting as a totem, gateway, portal; an object or gift from the spirit realm.
